Evenfall Wines

About Us

Our Vineyard

Nestled on the edge of the Tamar Valley in Tasmania, Evenfall Vineyard is a favourite among the region’s wineries. Our vineyard is meticulously planted with Pinot, Chardonnay, and some of the oldest Cabernet vines in Tasmania, reflecting our heritage as one of Tasmania’s founding sites.

Our eastern-facing slopes benefit from the Tamar River’s moderating influence, which regulates temperature and provides humidity that helps to shield our grapes from harsh UV rays. This natural protection ensures the optimal growth of our vines, contributing to the uniqueness of our wines.

A small creek runs along the southern side of our vineyard, connecting to the Tamar River. This creates a natural breeze way that flows through our vineyard, cooling the grapes as it passes through the leaves, enhancing their quality and flavour.

Evenfall Vineyard thrives, reaching its full potential year after year. Overseen with dedication and expertise, our vineyard continues to produce exceptional wines, reflecting the true character of our unique location.

Our 2022 vintage received much acclaim. Our Pinot Noir in particular receiving 95/100 in industry reviews. We anticipate a similar reception with the release of our 2023 vintage.

Our Story

Evenfall is Richard Winspear’s first wine venture. Having grown up in Tasmania as part of a land-owning pastoral family, Richard knows that success in any venture is dependent on a bold vision for the future, and trust in a surrounding team of experts.

When the Evenfall property came on the market in 2019, Richard was immediately captured by the estate’s presence, and its potential to grow cool-climate, elegant wines that could rival the very best in the world. Richard next set about building a team that could turn his vision into a reality, starting with long term friends and business partners Ben and Vanessa Gourlay and Magnus McGlashan.

Today, both the vision and the reality are a range of wines that tells a story of place, people, culture and the geographic advantages of Tasmania. It also sets an ambition that these wines must strive to be internationally significant, and in doing so, that they should aspire to be beyond compare. More than Tasmanian alone, Evenfall is a distinct expression of the Tamar River, and the neatly assembled patchwork of landscapes that thread its story.

The team includes Natalie Fryar as co-located collaborator and consultant, Liam McElhinney as winemaker and Matthais Utzinger as viticulturist.

Our Name

‘Evenfall’ is the old-fashioned word for twilight, or more specifically, that passage of the day when the sun begins to fade until it has finally set.

We like to think that the estate chose its own name, as if it offered up the idea of its own accord.

As you stand on the western ridge at the top of the vineyard, you are framed by tall gums and even taller skies. You look across a steep, almost terraced vineyard that runs down to a quaint, brick-built chapel, scanning the imposing practicality of the Bellebonne winery on the way, and then onto a sharp, contemporary restaurant, sympathetically designed with weatherboard and large expansive windows, and flanked by a generous wooden deck. The whole scene is then folded into a long, lazy bend in the Tamar River, which looks across to mountains, and then stretches out to sea. It is a place of tides, cool mint-crisp air, and soft natural beauty. It is at its best at Evenfall.

Our Family

Bellebonne is crafted by Natalie Fryar, ‘Australia’s Sparkling Queen’, who has devoted her career to crafting exquisite wines. That passion, combined with the knowledge that Tasmania creates sparkling wines of detail and precision, led her to establish Bellebonne with the sole focus of creating Australia’s best sparkling. Her wines are framed around beautiful fruit first, building complexity and depth to support that. It’s about capturing the pristine fruit power and elegance of Tasmania – to capture something magical about this place and share it.
